Biography: Kalan was born in a farming village, bordering the cold wastes to the north of Talibar. Life was always tough, but rewarding. This was, of course, until an Orc Slaving Clan, moving over the border, swept over his village. They killed the weak, old, young; all those unable to work. He, his brother, and his sister were taken. He was thirteen.
For more than a year the Clan's violent raiding actions on ill-defended border regions and villages continued, adding slaves and loot to their horde. During this time, Kalan and his siblings were horribly abused. His sister died from Rickets, and his brother, permanently deformed from infection and malnutrition, was killed by the Orcs.
They made it to their home in the wastes, and then Kalan was subjected to back-breaking labour and degrading acts. For another year he lived as such, and his mind began to change. He began to see lives in general as worthless, become numb to death.
On his fifteenth birthday,drunken Orcs shambled into his cell, mocking him, before they shoved him to the ground, holding his arms and legs, and drew swords. They said that they were going to "cut him nice and slow" to see if "he squeels". As the blade lowered downward, Kalan let loose a burst of rudimentary magic, knocking the blade aside. The orcs, most of which had never seen magic, released him, terrified. Before he could do anything else, he was suddenly surrounded by fire. An Orc Shaman had witnessed the event, conjuring up a shield of flame. The Shaman, seeing his potential, took him in as his personal slave. Over the next year, Kalan was taught Orcish Magic, mostly based on summoning the Will of Bane.
Released from most of the burden of labour and abuse, he poured his life into the study. He soon discovered things the Shaman had, in his haste and desire for power, had overlooked. He quickly surpassed the master, and began to read texts that the Shaman could not.
On his sixteenth birthday,he had finished all of the Shaman's looted tomes, and knew what he had to do. After weeks of preparation, he sprung a trap on the Shaman; Summoned a BaneSpawn under his feet, which quickly slaughtered him, and swept through the camp, covering his exit.
Kalan only took the tomes, an orcish blade, and six weeks worth of food.
He wandered from the wastes, moving south, the only thing he remembered about his home; on the verge of death, run out of food, he was found twenty miles from Imperia by a passing Army Patrol.
Living in the Imperial slums, he eventually gained a sponsership to join the grand Imperial Academy of Magic. He excelled, but was isolated from his rich and influential peers. In his isolation, he did the only thing that had saved him; studied.
He eventually learned of Gods and Goddesses, of varieties of faith and so forth;
He quickly rejected the idealistic religious paths, believing them childlike; Harsh and brutal realism had been burned into his mind.
However, he also quickly rejected cults, seeing them to worship death, destruction, chaos in itself, for itself; He believed this to be idiotic.
Eventually, he came to the belief that the true Gods, the only gods that truly meant anything in the world, were Bane, Nazu, and Kelevmor.
Bane, because Hatred and Fear were tools; Hatred drove your abilities, gave you meaning; Fear was to be conquered, and to be used. Tyranny was the most perfect form of goverment; The strong ruling over the weak, and inspiring struggle.
Nazu, because Chaos culled the weak, brought out the strong, and was a perfect form of struggle. Suffering and sadness were both tools and things to conquer; to be used against your enemies, to be used as a driving force, and to be conquered by the strong.
Kelevmor, because death is the binding trait of all existence;Death also ends the weak, and tests the strong, and as thus is the last to be overcome, conquered.
Kalan, with this new philosophy, viewed the students and Teachers of the academy to be weak fools, deluded into peace; afraid of true power, and so they locked it away. He broke into the forbidden tomes of necromancy of the academy; this confirmed his belief that they were afraid of it.
Kalan unleashed a horde of undead soldiers upon the academy, slaughtering students and teachers left and right. He stole the forbidden texts, and disapeared from the city.
He has used the necromantic texts to prolong his life, and has now lived for 128 years, learning dark magic, demonic magic, and necromancy.
