Unfortunately, there is little good news on the war front. Imperial forces have suffered heavy losses at the hands of these mysterious foes. The death toll is estimated at tens of thousands, with no way of making an accurate count as of yet. Conquered regions are rendered uninhabitable by poison and plague, choking off all plant life or mutating it into strange and lethal forms.

As the inexplicably altered region continues to grow in diameter, it draws ever closer to Surna. The blackened, unnaturally tall trees can be seen from Surna, even in the center of town. Trade has been all but completely cut off, as the forests are extremely dangerous at night. This has had an enormous impact on Surna's economy, leaving many people in poverty and many businesses closed down. Necessary supplies and provisions have also stopped arriving regularly, which may force the Guard to order rationing. Monster-hunters report that the usual threats seem to have either retreated or been killed off; Shades are now all that is left, as well as other yet-to-be-identified creatures.

There is a ray of hope, however, which is the successful mission of a small team led by Zayl Rathman, that saw over 300,000 "Abesquilian" soldiers brought to our side through the use of a magical ritual. Since this blow was dealt, the Abesquilians seem to have been weakened, their strategy and organization deteriorating. Similar missions may be conducted by others in the near future; should they also be successful, the tide of war will surely be turned.
