The Overgod of all the realms of The Crystal Sphere. All deities of are subject to him, even those who operate in other planes. Ao has no need for worshipers, unlike "normal" gods who can "die" from lack of worship. Ao initiated this in order to enforce his will that the gods act like guardians of the Balance rather than kings of mortals. The cult of Ao is led by "ministers" instead of clerics, since these cultists never receive any spells from the overgod. (On the other hand, they have never been slain.) Strangely, followers of Ao have never been found in the afterlife, and are rumored to be interred in the Wall of the Faithless. Ao's laws determines the rule of the gods of Oldenland. These include: No two gods in the same pantheon can have identical portfolios, and when two gods clash, either one god fades from the Realms, the gods merge, or one or both gods alters their porfolio. Ao answers to a superior entity known only as a being of neutrality. It is insinuated that this superior is The Avatar. Ao's master is insinuated that he is God. Ao created the crystal sphere that holds the world of Oldenland. It was an empty, gray, and misty void, a timeless place of nothingness that existed before light and darkness were separate. From the crystal, the twin goddesses Selûne and Shar emerged, the first deities.

Though Aeria may know him, few worship him, and those who do are either foolish or have rare, mysterious reasons.
