If you want to get real technical, the Odyssey and the various pong consoles were the very first, then came Atari and it's competitors then the NES revolutionized the entire video game industry with it's 8bit crazyness. Then there was the sega which came to compete against Nintendo and they both produced their own 16 bit consoles the SNES and Sega Genesis and then finally came the N64, the first 64bit console ever that took the world by storm, this is when the Playstation came into the competition, about thirty years after gaming got into the world. Also, let's not forget the video game crash of 84, which was one of the largest industry crashes in the past century and Playstation wasn't even a glint in Sony's eye at that point.
Edit: But if we're talking games that've stood the test of time and whos very mention make us think of everything gaming was, is and is going to be, my personal pick is Zelda, though Mario and Sonic could qualify too, Sonic less so.
