+Backstory+ 'Masquerade' is a fleshless, bodiless entity, formed from the tortured shards of a substantial piece of Zayl's soul. The hate and loss of another person is all he has ever known--he has desires, lusts, fears, memories that resound within him, but he does not and cannot understand them.
Masquerade was formed after Zayl was killed by Kelly Laurence, whom he had fallen in love with. Upon Zayl's death he was torn from the process of life and death by a being of darkness in the service of Shar, Lil Oloth, literally, 'The Darkness'. Inside the void that was her realm she took Zayl's soul and warped it, torturing his fears and memories, fracturing it and corrupting it in such a way that allowed Lil Oloth to gain control. Zayl was then returned to the mortal world to be a slave in service to Lil Oloth and, by proxy, Shar.
Zayl was trapped, unable to escape a nightmarish existence where he could not control his own actions, where he committed daily atrocities in Shar's name. Though Zayl retained partial control, whenever Lil Oloth called, he would serve.
Zayl was finally able to escape this nightmare during The Otherworld crisis. Drawn by her own hubris and foolish pride, Lil Oloth attempted to invade the Otherworld in order to gain power enough to overthrow Shar. Instead, however, she was murdered by Phobia for her efforts. Escaping Shar's notice by this grace, Zayl was able to work out a deal with Bane, Lord of Tyranny, in which, in return for the complete restoration of his body, Zayl would pledge temporary service to Bane against Lord Phobia and his minions, while also gifting Bane the infamous Black Helm. Zayl was 'free' for the time being.
The corruption, however, had not vanished. During the Prophet's Inquisition, Zayl was forced to remove himself from Surna in fear that the corruption, whom he was fighting daily battles with for control, would hurt his family and friends. After weeks of feverish battles of will in Surna's forest, Zayl finally tore the corruption from his soul and cast it from his body.
The corruption, however, had taken on a life of it's own.
Now Masquerade wanders the shadows of the world, feeling hate that is not his, terror that he does not understand, sorrow for people he does not know. A twisted corruption of everything Zayl is. Appearance Information
