Runes WERE the nordic alphabet.

And I like Koliup's idea. You can't really expect a stone with an ancient letter on it to do exactly what you want. Hell, some of the runes might even be completely self-harming instead of doing something to your advantage.

And I really think you'd need ALOT of special expertise in runes to be able to engrave weapons with them, not just stick them on a sword and mumble a few random things and poof, you've enchanted your weapon.

It'd take a special expertise within rune-crafting to use them. And they need to be pretty rare.
